Christian Joy (b. Christiane Joy Hultquist) is an internationally recognized costume designer and artist living and working in New York City. Upon moving to New York in 1998 and with no formal training, Christian began deconstructing used clothing found at local thrift shops. Her early looks, often created using found materials and occasionally eschewing thread and print for glue and marker pens caught the eye of Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer Karen O who began wearing Christian’s riotous looks on stage beginning a collaboration that has spanned over two decades.
In the succeeding years Christian’s works have been seen on stages, in galleries and museums around the world, as well as award shows such as The MTV Movie Awards, The Grammy’s and The Oscars. She has created looks for Childish Gambino, Maggie Rogers and Brittany Howard and worked with artists including Marcel Dzama on his recent production for the Performa Biennial 2023 in New York City.
Christian’s work has been exhibited in The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Mode Museum in Hasselt, Belgium. as well as galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Hong Kong.
Christian has been featured in The New York Times, Vogue, Elle, Rolling Stone and Spin as well as many other major publications.
In addition to her costume work Christian has created an extensive body of painting, sculptures and assemblages.
